UNP to contest general elections alone

Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickremasinghe, confirmed today that the UNP would contest the upcoming General Elections alone, i.e. without the coalition partners that had banded together to gain victory in January’s Presidential election. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Wickremasinghe said, ‘The UNP is definitely contesting the elections by ourselves – it’s worked so well for us in the past, why stop now?’

Reaction across the political spectrum was swift with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake immediately awarding himself all remaining government tenders. Minister Karunanayake said to reporters, ‘I have no doubt at all that we will do well in this election and that I will continue to remain in government and serve the people. The fact that I have planned a holiday to Switzerland with my family and all my household belongings, is just a coincidence.’
