Mahinda and BushSri Lanka’s 54-person delegation to the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York dominated proceedings through sheer weight of numbers. Speaking at a press conference, U.S President George W. Bush said, ‘We were very impressed with the number of people who attended - clearly this Sri Lanka place had a lot to talk to about. Thakshin [Sinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand] wanted to discuss the coup in Bangkok but he only had four people with him so he couldn’t have been that serious; I told him to send me an e-mail’.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan commented, ‘The summit was extremely productive; I spent a lot of my time talking with President Mahinda Rajapakse about Sri Lanka’s security problems, the Chinese delegation had a series of meetings with Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam to discuss investment opportunities and I believe President George W. Bush spent most of his time with some Sri Lankan lady discussing the difficulties her son was having with the SAT exam’.
